Hate Crime amendement needs urgent support, Task Force says

The National Lesbian and Gay Task Force Action Fund called today for help in contacting senators to support hate crimes legislation that could come up for a vote as early as Thursday. Similar legislation has already been OK'd in the House.

According to an email sent by Executive Director Rea Carey, "The Task Force has learned that the Senate may be voting on hate crimes legislation as soon as this Thursday as an amendment to the Department of Defense appropriations bill. That's why it's so important for you to make your voice heard now, before it's too late. Call your senators right away to urge them to pass the hate crimes amendment without delay.

"... Once the amendment passes the Senate, it will go back to the House for approval. And once that's happened, it will be sent to President Obama for his signature. This means we are literally steps away from securing federal protection for the LGBT community from vicious attacks and hate.

"But your senators need to hear from you. ... Every single one of us must act — and act now — to ensure that it is passed."
